Why does each day have its own mysteries?
In 2002 Saint John Paul II proposed a weekly order in his letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae: the joyful on Monday and Saturday, the sorrowful on Tuesday and Friday, the glorious on Wednesday and Sunday, and on Thursday the mysteries of light, which he proposed in that same letter.
Before then, the joyful were prayed on Monday and Thursday, and the glorious on Saturday as well. The joyful moved to Saturday to leave Thursday free.
It is a suggestion, not a rule: the letter leaves room to choose other mysteries as each person needs and as the liturgical season suggests. By custom, the Sundays of Advent and Christmas take the joyful, and the Sundays of Lent the sorrowful.
